In 1898 the Institute was founded. Morozov, who specialized in the treatment of tumors. The initiative of its creation was made by a professor at the University of Moscow, the famous surgeon L. L. The institution was also under the leadership of SI Sergeev, BE Peterson, PA Herzen. The Institute was transformed 36 years after its creation. Since that moment he became the Central Research Institute of Tumor Pathologies. This was the subordinate institution of the People's Commissar of Health of the RSFSR. In the period 1922-1933 the supervisor was the scientist-surgeon P. A. Herzen, who was the founder of the school of oncologists in the capital. He made a significant contribution to the further formation of the institution. Thanks to this, the organizations were given his name - Herzen. The Institute in the period from 1982 to 2013 was under the supervision of Professor VI Chissov. To date, the head of the institution is A. D. Kaprin.
The Herzen Institute includes three advanced Russian Centers. They are engaged in laser photodynamic diagnostics and treatment of tumors, palliative care, epidemiological studies. The Dissertation Council specializes in oncology, radiation diagnostics, radiation therapy.
The Herzen Institute is the leader in the development of methods for treating tumor patients. Thanks to new implementations, it became possible to maximally preserve the damaged organ and limit the negative impact of therapy on the human body. Today, the staff consists of an academician and 2 correspondents of the RAMS, 40 doctors, 21 professors and 90 candidates of science, 17 of which are laureates of the State and Government Prizes of the Russian Federation.
